Qualcomm invests in RISC-V architecture company

According to media reports, RISC-V instruction set architecture development controller and SoC leader SiFive recently raised $65.4 million, of which Qualcomm, Intel and Samsung are important investors.

In the past, in the CPU architecture, X86 and ARM have always been the leader. Intel's X86 architecture dominates the computer era, while ARM's architecture dominates smartphones. ARM's success is due to openness, but in fact ARM is only open in business mode, not technically. As an emerging architecture of RISC-V, with the advantages of openness and flexibility, it is expected to come to the fore in the Internet of Things era.

It is reported that RISC-V is an open source instruction set architecture (ISA) based on the Reduced Instruction Set (RISC) principle. It can be used freely for any purpose, allowing anyone to design, manufacture and sell RISC-V chips and software without over-engineering specific micro-architectures.

Analysts said that the flexibility and openness of RISC-V made Qualcomm extremely interested. According to SiFive's current design capabilities, it takes only one to three months to develop a new RISC-V IP, and ARM often takes one year or more.

As the global giant in the field of smart phone chips, Qualcomm's chip architecture is based on ARM solutions, and Qualcomm's investment in RISC-V means that Qualcomm may not rely entirely on ARM architecture in mobile phone chip solutions in the future.
