Knometa: Samsung ranked first in total global foundry capacity in 2021

According to the latest 2022 Global Wafer Capacity Report released by Knometa Research, 57% of the total global wafer foundry capacity in 2021 was occupied by the top five companies, namely Samsung, TSMC, Micron, SK Hynix, and Kioxia/Western Digital.

The report shows that the top five companies had a combined monthly production capacity of 12.2 million wafers in 2021, a 10 percent increase from the previous year and a growth rate that was 1 percent higher than the industry's total capacity.

Among these five giants, Samsung accounted for the highest proportion. By the end of 2021, it accounted for 19% of the total global IC wafer foundry production capacity, and its production capacity was 44% higher than that of the second-ranked TSMC.

Samsung has increased capital spending by 45% in 2020, with most of the funds going to building multiple 12-inch wafer production lines at its Pyeongtaek fab.
