IC Insights:IC sales turn negative

SemiMediaEdit
August 8, 2022

According to the latest report from IC Insights, IC market sales experienced an unprecedented decline in June due to a sharp drop in memory prices.

IC Insights pointed out that the IC market recorded its first-ever June sequential sales decline this year. Typically, high single-digit or double-digit sales gains have been the pattern for June IC sales. Even in its previously weakest year (1985), June IC sales increased 1%. Never, until this year, have June IC sales declined.

IC Insights believes that the main reason for the decline in IC sales in June this year is the sharp decline in memory chip sales.

Judging from the second-quarter financial results of Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, the sharp decline in revenue was not evident, as the decline in June was offset by growth in April and May. However, Micron expects its sales in the fourth quarter (which ends in August) to drop 17%.

Samsung and SK Hynix did not provide sales forecasts for the next quarter, but IC Insights expects their third-quarter outlook to be similar to Micron's forecast.
