GlobalFoundries announced on the 19th that it will build a new fab near its headquarters in Malta, New York, and spend $1 billion to increase the output of the existing fab.

GlobalFoundries said it will build a second wafer fab near its headquarters in central Malta, and hopes to double the chip output of the Malta site to solve the global wafer shortage.

GlobalFoundries CEO Tom Caulfield said that it is expected to grow faster in the next ten years than in the past 50 years. GlobalFoundries is playing a role and working together to meet the growing demand for technological innovation.

Industry insiders believe that GlobalFoundries' expansion will focus on 14nm, and the monthly production capacity will reach 35,000-40,000 units by the end of this year.

In addition, GlobalFoundries also plans to expand 22/28 and 40/45nm production capacity plans in Germany and Singapore.

In terms of 22/28nm, GlobalFoundries’ production capacity in Germany may reach 60,000 to 65,000 per month by the end of the year. In addition, in order to meet the needs of 5G and automobiles, the 40/45nm capacity of its new fab in Singapore will reach a maximum monthly output of 30,000 to 40,000 pieces.
