June 12, 2024 /SemiMedia/ -- Clas-SiC, a Scotland-based silicon carbide (SiC) wafer manufacturing company, is in discussions with several companies to collaborate on setting up one or more SiC power semiconductor fabs in India.

According to reports, Clas-SiC has submitted a proposal to the Indian government to invest approximately $700 million in the production of compound semiconductors in cooperation with Indian software company Zoho Corp. Pvt. The company has an investment budget of $200 million and hopes that the Indian national and local state governments will provide another $500 million to $600 million in funding to build a 200mm silicon carbide wafer fab.

“We are in discussions with several companies about silicon carbide manufacturing in India,” said Scott Forrest, Clas-SiC’s chief financial officer. He said he could not confirm any of the names because of the confidentiality of the discussions.

Forrest said the company will build a factory in India as a technology partner. There is no specific negotiation timetable at present, but it hopes to resume negotiations after the Indian general election.
