Renesas: Chip shortages may last into late 2021

According to Bloomberg, Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata recently stated that Renesas’ factories are producing at full capacity to try to meet demand, but it is still impossible to judge when the market will balance.

Shibata said that at present, Renesas's 200mm wafer production line in Kyushu Island in southern Japan has been operating at full capacity, while its 300mm wafer fab in Naka City, northern Tokyo is also operating at full capacity.

"Chip supply remains tight in the first half of this year." Shibata said: "From the current situation, this situation will continue into the second half of the year. This is everyone's prediction."

"There is nothing we can do about this, because these factories are already operating at their limits," Shibata said.

Shibata said that it is unclear whether Renesas will become a beneficiary of the chip supply shortage, but a broader benefit is that Renesas has a deeper understanding of the importance of chips in the global economy.

In addition, Shibata also said that people should have known that cars are becoming electronic devices, which breaks the traditional supply chain model.
