SMIC announces capacity expansion plan

February 5, 2021

Today, Zhao Haijun, the co-CEO of SMIC, pointed out at the fourth quarter 2020 telephone financial report meeting that the company's production will continue to operate at full capacity in 2021 and promote production capacity expansion plans.

Zhao Haijun pointed out that the current global foundry production capacity is very tight, mainly because the market demand growth far exceeds expectations, while the expansion of the wafer fab is relatively slow.

Regarding the expansion plan, Zhao Haijun revealed that SMIC’s monthly production capacity of 300mm will be expanded by 10,000 pieces in 2021, and monthly production capacity of 200mm will be expanded by 45,000 pieces. However, since the overall expansion will be completed in the second half of the year, the expansion will not bring significant growth to revenue.
