On May 20th, GlobalFoundries issued an announcement saying that it planned to implement export safety control on Fab 8, its most advanced wafer factory in Malta, New York. GlobalFoundries said that the Fab 8 will implement the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and it will become the most advanced wafer fab in the US that meets ITAR regulations.

GlobalFoundries said that this move will strengthen cooperation with the US Department of Defense and the US defense industry, further consolidate US national security, and better serve the US government.

The measure will take effect later this year and will ensure the confidentiality and integrity of US defense-related applications, equipment, and parts produced at the Fab 8.

To date, GlobalFoundries has invested more than $13 billion in the Fab 8, which is also its most advanced fab with more than 3,000 employees, and one of its businesses is to work with the US Department of Defense to research next-generation technologies.
