5G mobile phone sales will reach 200 million units next year

According to reports, Qualcomm expects global sales of 5G smartphones to reach 200 million units in 2020, including Apple's flagship smartphones, which will be launched next fall.

Although Apple has not disclosed when to launch 5G mobile phones. But Qualcomm chief financial officer Akash Palkhiwala said in an investor conference call that there will be two turning points for 5G chips next year.

One is in the spring, several large mobile phone manufacturers in China and Samsung are expected to launch new 5G phones at that time. The second turning point will be in the fall, with flagship phones using 5G technology, which may refer to Apple and Google phones.

If the 5G network is successfully popularized next year, the global mobile phone chip suppliers will benefit from it. Previously, research firms IDC and Goldman Sachs also gave estimates for the 5G market next year, which were 123.5 million and 120 million, respectively, which was nearly 60% lower than Qualcomm's estimate.

In fact, compared with the 300 million estimates given by TSMC, Qualcomm’s estimate is relatively conservative. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon also said that based on the expectations of the 2020 5G iPhone, the 200 million forecast is not surprising.
