Recently, Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (VIS) announced that it has decided to invest $236 million to acquire Globalfoundries' 8-inch fab in Singapore to meet customer orders and technology needs.

VIS pointed out that Globalfoundries' 3E plant has a monthly capacity of 35,000 8-inch wafers. After the acquisition, the annual production capacity of VIS will increase by more than 400,000 8-inch wafers; VIS will take over all employees of the fab, customer products and MEMS customers.

Not long ago, TMSC announced that it will build a new 8-inch factory next to its sixth plant. At the same time, UMC also announced that it will continue to expand its 8-inch capacity. In conjunction with VIS to buy Globalfoundries' 3E plant, industry insiders expect that the demand for related applications for 8-inch wafers this year will be greatly improved.
