GlobalWafers to build new silicon wafer fab in US

According to Nikkei Asia, GlobalWafers, the world's third-largest silicon wafer maker, announced on Monday that it will build a $5 billion plant in Sherman, Texas.

The new plant will be located near GlobiTech, the US subsidiary of GlobalWafers. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, with production scheduled to begin in 2025. The report pointed out that the plant will become the largest 12-inch silicon wafer material production base in the United States.

GlobalWafers said the new facility will allow the company to meet growing local demand from customers including TSMC, Intel and Samsung.

GlobalWafers stated that the investment in Texas is expected to create as many as 1,500 jobs locally, and after multiple stages of equipment installation, the production capacity will eventually reach 1.2 million wafers per month, in line with market demand.

GlobalWafers pointed out that 12-inch silicon wafers are an indispensable key material for all advanced semiconductor manufacturing plants. As global semiconductor manufacturers such as GlobalFoundries, Intel, Samsung, Texas Instruments and TSMC have announced their expansion in the United States, the local demand for high-quality upstream material silicon wafers will grow significantly.
