Fab bought from GlobalFoundries adds 15% capacity to VIS
Wafer foundry Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (VIS) announced on the 2nd that the Singapore 8-inch fab bought from GlobalFoundries has completed the settlement on December 31, 2019. The fab officially became a VIS Singapore subsidiary. The fab currently employs approximately 700 people and is expected to add 15% to the overall capacity of VIS.
VIS pointed out that global 8-inch demand has been very strong in recent months, and has seen tight production capacity. The main driving forces are CMOS image sensors (CIS), power management, drivers, fingerprint recognition ICs, and discrete components. With the 15-20% capacity brought by the new fab, the supply of VIS is still tight.
A VIS spokesperson pointed out that with the addition of the Singapore fab, the company is expected to have a significant growth. In terms of research and development, the spokesperson said that gallium nitride (GaN) has strong demand in 5G and connected cars, and will play a key role in the semiconductor industry in the future. VIS has been continuously investing in the development of gallium nitride (GaN) in recent years, and is still at the stage of adjusting performance and reliability.
