On July 3, Chiu Tzu-Yin announced his resignation as a non-executive vice chairman of the SMIC board of directors.
According to public information, Chiu Tzu-Yin was born in 1956. Received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master degree in Business Administration from Columbia University.
Chiu Tzu-Yin, 55, has more than 27 years of experience in the semiconductor industry. He worked in the Institute of Solid State Technology in Munich, Germany, and joined AT&T Bell Labs as the head of the high-speed electronics R&D department. Subsequently, he joined TSMC and served as senior director of the factory.
In 2001, Chiu Tzu-Yin and SMIC’s founder Richard Chang established SMIC as the company's senior vice president of operations, once considered the most important deputy of Richard. Later, due to different opinions with Richard on the company's operation management and other issues, Chiu Tzu-Yin left SMIC in 2005.
Subsequently, Chiu Tzu-Yin joined Hua Hong NEC as Vice President of Operations at the invitation of Hua Hong NEC. However, because Hua Hong NEC's 12-inch semiconductor production line project has been put on hold for too long, Chiu Tzu-Yi left Hua Hong NEC to work as a COO at the Malaysian foundry, Silterra.
In February 2009, the Hua Hong NEC 12-inch semiconductor production line construction plan was re-raised, and Chiu Tzu-Yin returned to Hua Hong NEC as CEO at the invitation of the chairman of Hua Hong Group.
On August 5, 2011, Chiu Tzu-Yin became the CEO and executive director of SMIC. On May 10, 2017, Chiu Tzu-Yin resigned as CEO and served as non-executive vice chairman of the board of directors. Today, Chiu Tzu-Yin has resigned from the title and is completely out of touch with SMIC, and there is no news for him whether he has the next goal or wants to return to the family.
