According to the latest report from IC Insights, global sales of CMOS image sensors are expected to increase year by year until 2023 due to the increasing popularity of digital imaging products.

IC Insights previously pointed out in the market analysis of optoelectronics, sensors, and discrete components (O-S-D) that sales of CMOS image sensors are expected to increase by 9% in 2019, reaching a record high of $15.5 billion and growing by 4% in 2020 to $16.1 billion.

In terms of shipments, global CMOS image sensor shipments are forecast to increase by 11% this year to 6.1 billion units. After the global economy entered a recession, the growth rate will shrink in 2020, with an annual growth rate of 9% to 6.6 billion units. In fact, since 2011, the sales and shipments of CMOS sensors have been at a record high level for eight consecutive years. The research institute believes that the growth trend will continue until 2023.

In terms of application categories, mobile phones used to be the largest end-user market for CMOS image sensors, accounting for 61% of sales and 64% of shipments in 2018. However, other applications such as automotive, medical, and security are expected to be the market growth momentum in the next five years.

The report shows that the automotive system is the fastest growing application, with a projected CAGR of 29.7% to $3.2 billion in 2023, accounting for 15% of total market sales for the year, compared to 6% in 2018. The medical/scientific system is the second fastest growing application with a compound annual growth rate of 22.7% to $1.2 billion; the security camera is the third, with a compound annual growth rate of 19.5% to $2 billion. Industrial products such as robots and the Internet of Things have a compound annual growth rate of 16.1% to US$1.8 billion, followed by consumer applications such as toys and virtual/augmented reality games, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.1% to $172 million.
As for mobile phone CMOS image sensor sales, it is estimated to reach 9.8 billion US dollars in 2023, and the compound annual growth rate is only 2.6%, accounting for 45% of the total market, which is much lower than 61% in 2018. In addition, the compound annual growth rate of CMOS image sensors for personal computers and tablets is 5.6%, reaching $990 million.
