Renesas Electronics is announcing the entry-level S5D3 MCU product group. The four new S5D3 series MCUs are R7FS5D37A2A01CLJ, R7FS5D37A3A01CFP, R7FS5D37A3A01CFM and R7FS5D37A3A01CNB.

Featuring 120 MHz Arm® Cortex®-M4 cores, these components integrate advanced security features and are equipped with common features that simplify the design of cost-sensitive, low-power Internet of Things (IoT) endpoint devices. The entry-level S5D3 series MCUs are designed for general-purpose industrial, building automation and office equipment, as well as smart metering and appliance applications using capacitive touch human machine interfaces (HMIs).

The Renesas Synergy Software Package (SSP) supports S5D3 series MCUs with HAL drivers, application frameworks, and real-time operating systems. Embedded system designers can use the Renesas Synergy development environment, e2 studio or IAR Embedded Workbench®, to build systems for custom designs. The S5D3 series MCUs are based on a 40nm process, integrated with the Secure Encryption Engine (SCE7) and key protection, and use the root of trust to protect the communication security of the MCU boot code and IoT endpoint devices. This feature eliminates the need for external safety features, which reduces material costs. Each S5D3 series MCU has excellent power consumption levels. The operating mode consumes 100 μA/MHz and is only 1.3 μA in standby mode. The VBATT power consumption is 900 nA while maintaining the built-in real-time clock continuous operation. These features make this family of MCUs ideal for low power, high performance applications.

The S5D3 series MCUs are equipped with 512 KB of flash memory and a large capacity of 256 KB of SRAM memory. This built-in flash memory and SRAM's unique 2:1 ratio support frequent communication stack utilization, enabling reliable IoT connectivity, while the 8KB data flash read and write cycle is superior to similar products. Each S5D3 MCU integrates multiple analog components, including two independent 12-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with three sample-and-holds, a 2-channel 12-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a high-speed 6-channel comparator, a temperature sensor and 6-channel programmable gain amplifier (PGA). The S5D3 series MCUs also feature a scalable set of 13 independent 32-bit general-purpose timers and various communication interfaces such as USB, CAN, I2C, SPI, SDHI, and SSI.

Daryl Khoo, vice president of product marketing for IoT Platforms, Renesas Electronics, said, "With superior security, memory performance, MCU scalability and Synergy platform support, the S5D3 family of MCUs has won the competition in its class. If customers need to add features, expand memory, or achieve higher performance in the future, they can scale up through the pin-compatible S5D5, S5D9, and S7G2 MCU product groups. ”

The Renesas Synergy S5D3 series MCUs are now available from Renesas Electronics' global distributors and are priced from $5.10 to $5.40.
