Maxim Integrated announces the DeepCover® Secure Authenticator, the DS28E83, which enables medical device designers to effectively protect surgical tool data from memory damage and high-energy gamma radiation during sterilization. As the industry's first safety certification program designed for gamma ray sterilization, the device enhances patient safety and supports encryption based on Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) and Secure Hash Algorithm 256 (SHA-256).

Maxim Integrated releases industry's first radiation safety authenticator-SemiMedia

Medical device manufacturers typically use specialized gamma or electron beam processes to sterilize specialized surgical tools or sensors. The high amount of radiation used in any process destroys standard non-volatile memory (NVM) for automatic identification, calibration, and data fabrication in electronic medical devices. This can threaten medical device data and patient safety, both of which are critical to medical device manufacturers.

The DS28E83 Safety Authenticator integrates a radiation-tolerant NVM to prevent data loss during sterilization. With this capability, device designers can implement economical protection against illegal reuse and equipment forgery in the aftermarket. By allowing the use of gamma rays or electron beams to sterilize electrosurgical instruments, the DS28E83 greatly enhances patient safety. Secure authentication through industry standards and application of elliptic curve and public key encryption to protect patients from the risks associated with illegal counterfeiting or accidental reuse. With Maxim's single-contact 1-Wire interface, the IC is easily integrated into the customer's design for medical surgical tools and sensor applications.

The DS28E83 is priced at $1.22 (base on 1000pcs), and the DS28E83EVKIT# evaluation board is priced at $65. For more information on this product, please visit Maxim Integrated's official website: www.maximintegrated.com
