According to Reuters, Samsung Electronics has chosen Taylor, Texas as the location of its new fab, which will cost $17 billion.
Samsung said in a statement that the Taylor fab is about 25 miles away from the current Austin fab and covers an area of more than 5 million square meters. The new fab will begin construction in the first half of next year, and is expected to start mass production in the second half of 2024.
In addition to providing advanced logic chips for mobile devices and autonomous vehicles, Samsung has not disclosed the specific product line of the new fab. However, the report pointed out that the new fab may use ASML's EUV to produce 5nm or more advanced cutting-edge chips for major customers such as Qualcomm.
The report also pointed out that Samsung is currently considering setting up factories in Arizona and New York, which will be much larger than its current chip fab in Austin, Texas.
